Resumen detallado

Google's parent company, Alphabet, and technology giant Microsoft reported higher revenue last quarter, driven by their cloud businesses. Strong demand for computing power and artificial intelligence (AI) applications boosted the figures, according to quarterly results published on Wednesday. Korean Samsung profits from the same trend.

Alphabet's cloud division more than doubled revenue to 30.7 billion dollars. The company's total revenue reached 127.6 billion dollars, up 25 per cent from the previous year. Despite stronger-than-expected growth in its cloud division, Alphabet's overall results fell short of analysts' expectations. Net profit even fell by a quarter to 26.2 billion dollars due to investment losses.

At Microsoft, its Azure cloud division—the world's second-largest after Amazon's—generated almost half as much revenue again. The US company's total revenue grew by 19 per cent to more than 92 billion dollars. Microsoft is going all in on AI. On Monday, the company offered a voluntary redundancy scheme to around 60,000 employees, roughly a quarter of its workforce.
