SYDNEY: Usman Khawaja claimed on Saturday that the entire Australian team knew about the 2018 “Sandpapergate” ball-tampering scandal in Cape Town. He also said the tactic had been used in the previous Test at Port Elizabeth.

Captain Steve Smith, his deputy David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were sent home in disgrace at the time. A Cricket Australia (CA) investigation found they were the only three players with prior knowledge of the plot. Smith was banned for a year and sacked as captain, Warner was suspended for 12 months and stripped of all leadership roles, and Bancroft received a nine-month ban.

But Khawaja, a former opener who retired this year after 88 Tests, told the Sydney Morning Herald that everyone knew. “It was all of us. Not the batters, not the bowlers, not the staff. All of us,” he said ahead of next week’s release of his autobiography, which devotes a chapter to the affair.
