Dog owners have been warned about stricter rules which have now come into force for people who legally keep banned types of dog. From November 1, 2026, children under the age of 12 must not be left in close contact with an exempted banned dog in a home, garden or other private place without appropriate supervision.
Government guidance says young children are at greater risk of dog-related injuries in the home, with incidents often involving an animal they know. Children can make sudden movements, loud noises or come into close contact with a dog in ways it may find uncomfortable.
Dogs can also react unexpectedly if they are stressed, unwell, overwhelmed or unable to move away from a child. Under the new rules, supervision must be in person, meaning cameras, baby monitors and other devices cannot be used as a substitute.
